After last year’s very rebellious punk theme, Monday night’s Met Gala raised its glamour quotient quite a few notches. The white-tie event was in keeping with the theme of this year’s Costume Institute exhibit: “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” James was a British-born designer who was known for his structured aesthetic. As the stars of Hollywood and the fashion world stepped out onto the red carpet, it was hard to ignore the wide variety of black and white ensembles, which seemed to be the most prominent trend of the night. Here are some of our top black and white picks of the night.

Sarah Jessica Parker decided to fully embrace the evening’s theme in a black and white Oscar de la Renta ball gown, complete with elbow length white gloves, and a very elaborate updo.

17 year old actress Hailee Steinfeld looked incredibly sophisticated for her age in a black and white Prabal Gurung gown and a smokey eye to complete the look.

Rihanna stepped out in a white, stomach bearing Stella McCartney gown with an embellished neck and long sleeves.

There were also dozens of power couples that took the red carpet by storm. Making up for last years floral disaster, Kim and Kanye looked perfectly in sync, both choosing outfits by Lanvin.

Blake Lively with husband Ryan Reynolds wore a blush Gucci dress with a plunging neckline and a long chiffon shoulder trail.

Victoria Beckham, accompanied by her soccer legend husband David Beckham, sported one of her own minimal, yet very elegant designs.

My favourite look of the night, however,  goes to the ever-flawless Beyonce who looked stunning in her low-cut Givenchy Haute Couture gown and veiled headpiece, accompanied by husband Jay Z, who made headlines for so graciously picking up one of her rings when she dropped it on the red carpet.

Some stars, however, took the white-tie dress code as merely a suggestion. The most prominent of these ensemble faux pas would be Cara Delevinge who arrived in a Stella McCartney white pants and a black crop top. Although she looked absolutely gorgeous, I am not impressed with her decision to wear the seemingly ordinary outfit to such an extravagant event. What do you think?
